“Solving the climate and biodiversity crisis is one of the greatest and most urgent challenges of our time. We're helping coral reefs survive until we do.”
According to scientific organizations such as NOAA and the International Coral Reef Society, coral reefs could disappear within the next decade if no action is taken to conserve these ecosystems. The rrreefs organization rebuilds reef structure to regenerate life and restore coastal protection. Their ecological reefs are designed to encourage the establishment of young corals while increasing the diversity and resilience of marine species.
Their projects have already contributed to the rehabilitation of reefs in regions such as the Philippines, Colombia, Ecuador and the British Virgin Islands, where corals, fish and crustaceans have already adopted the structures as their home. rrreefs' modular architecture enables the shape of the reefs to be customized to suit local conditions. It creates diverse habitats and interacts with marine currents. The textured surface of the bricks helps coral larvae to settle and develop, while offering them sheltered spaces, with protection from predators and sand deposits, and the bricks themselves provide space for all kinds of marine animals living in the reefs.
The organization's goal is to regenerate 1% of coastal reefs by 2034. These restored reefs will bring back abundant marine life, protect coasts and strengthen the resilience of local communities.
The team
rrreefs is an ETH-educated start-up based in Zurich. Their innovative approach combines science, engineering, art and education. Founded in October 2020 by Marie Griesmar, Ulrike Pfreundt and Hanna Kuhfuß, the team welcomed Joséphine Graf shortly afterwards. In 2023, rrreefs became an environmental and social impact company.
Technology and impact
Thanks to 3D printing, rrreefs produces complex bricks adapted to the needs of coral reefs using natural materials. Their micro-textured geometry facilitates the settlement of coral larvae, while the cavities provide habitats for various species. The use of baked clay as a material creates an ideal substrate for coral growth. Their next commitment is to produce locally to reduce CO2 emissions and create jobs in ecosystem restoration. Their digital and technological approach makes it easy to integrate the latest scientific discoveries into their system, and to adapt the bricks to local conditions.
Message from the rrreefs organization
You too can help save coral reefs.
Our mission is to revitalize declining reef habitats and create a new home for corals and marine life. Together, let's build a lasting legacy to preserve biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of our oceans.
We turn your environmental initiatives into thriving coral reefs. By partnering with rrreefs, your company will demonstrate its commitment to the planet while helping to protect the oceans.
