Speech by Ingrid Taillandier, architect, teacher, member of the Académie d'Architecture - ITAR architectures
Off-site construction is set to radically transform the building industry. Its advantages include speeding up building sites, reducing pollution and making work less arduous. Another aspect is the quality of the work, which is increasingly affected by the shortage and lack of skills in the workforce. ITAR uses prefabrication to optimise the use of materials and give a ‘human touch’ back to the generic industrialisation towards which we are moving, by placing it at the service of the individual and a territorial narrative.
Sensitivity to use and materiality are the two pillars of ITAR, an agency founded in 2006 by Ingrid Taillandier. Its projects are first and foremost about enriching the daily lives of users, with natural light, spaces that can be appropriated and opened up, enabling them to live both in the city and in their own homes. The agency continually takes up the immense but exciting challenge of defining the balances of tomorrow: between density and breathing space; between architecture and nature; between individual freedom and a sense of social cohesion. The care taken in the construction process reflects a concern for the long-term future of the site, going beyond a functional vision of the programme and using high-quality materials that bring dignity to the user. From prefabrication processes to the reinterpretation of traditional building methods, the agency has developed genuine expertise and an appetite for sober, innovative construction methods over the course of its projects. Over the past 17 years, ITAR has worked on both new-build and refurbishment projects, creating homes and offices. Whatever the project, domesticity and urban desires form the basis of an approach where the project is an interweaving of scales, where the small is as important as the large, and where the particular qualifies the general.
